2014 Race: The Main Aintree Contenders

The Grand National 2014 is run on Saturday April 5. Here we take a look at some of the leading contenders.

On His Own: He owes his place at the head of the market to the fact he was running a big race when falling at Becher's Brook on the second circuit in the 2012 race. He is also trained by top Irish handler Willie Mullins. This ten-year-old gelding fell at the 25th in 2013. He stays well and handles all going, including soft.

Join Together: This one is trained by Paul Nicholls, 2012's winning trainer with the now retired Neptune Collonges. Despite a disappointing 12th place in the 2013 event, Join Together has staked his claim to 2014 glory on some form lines. He ran over the awesome Aintree fences in early December 2012 in the Becher Chase. This is traditionally a great guide to the big race itself. He handled the obstacles with aplomb and ran on strongly into second place. As that event was over the shorter trip of 3m2f, the performance caught the eye of the bookies and punters alike. Deapite failing to reward supporters last time at Aintree, he would have a major shout if turning up at Liverpool on the first Saturday in April.

Cappa Bleu: Course specialists do well at Aintree and this runner fits that category. He was a really good fourth in the race in 2012 but should have finished closer. He was badly hampered at the seventh fence and was finishing well at the end. The ground may have been riding a touch too quick for him that year as he loves a good test of stamina. He then improved on that when runner-up last year behind the 66/1 longshot Aurora's Encore. Once again Cappa Bleu was closing at the finish, suggesting this extreme distance may actually be on the short side of his optimum trip. Trained by a shrewd Welshman in Evan Williams, Cappa Bleu must have every chance of going one place better this time. He will certainly appeal to each-way punters as he must be in the mix up at the death. At double figure odds you could do a lot worse than a shilling on this one.

Seabass: Was one of the most talked about horses before last year's horse race. This was because he was ridden by Katie Walsh, the daughter of Seabass's Irish trainer Ted. He had given Katie the best Aintree spin any lady jockey has ever had, coming third in 2012. Horses with previously great form over these unique steeplechase fences do tend to come back time and again to run well. So punters and bookmakers made Sea Bass the 11/2 Grand National betting favourite in 2013. However he failed to live up to expectations comiong home in 13th place. However young Ms Walsh has every right to keep dreaming of Aintree glory in 2014.
