The 34-year-old Smith (38-7, 22 KOs) was controversially knocked down in the final round before the German was awarded three scorecards of 119-108 in front of his home fans at the Rittal Arena in Wetzlar, Hessen.
A cautious first session belonged to Zeuge, who drew applause for a pair of successful combinations and continued to work the more sharply in the second.
Zeuge's counter-punching ability was clearly troubling Smith as an overhand right found the mark and the champion began to outwork his visitor from the centre of the ring.
Smith seemed determined to stay patient and compact in the face of the Zeuge's fast start and his opening came in the third when a meaty right hand momentarily shook the 25-year-old up.

Determined to nip Smith's momentum in the bud, Zeuge secured the fourth with some measured if unspectacular boxing punctuated by one standout right hook and went on to edge his challenger through three more uneventful rounds.
Smith appeared to be conserving energy with minimal work-rate and, when he did try and initiate an exchange in the eighth, was discouraged by a firm right uppercut and a well-timed left hook moments later.
Neither fighter looked capable of truly hurting the other but Zeuge -- his jab established -- consistently dictated both range and pace in the ninth and 10th rounds, much to the frustration of the Liverpudlian.
Urged on by his boxing brothers at ringside, Smith landed a promising right early in the 11th and followed up with his best round of the fight but it was too little too late as Zeuge rubber-stamped victory with a final-round knockdown Smith claimed was a slip.

Better news for the Smith family had already arrived on the undercard as Stephen Smith (25-3, 15 KOs) reeled off a facile first-round stoppage of Karoly Gallovich.
